Many audio-visual tools currently exists and new ones become available every day. Thus it is impossible to list them all. This chapter gives an overview of the main new electronic resources for human rights educators. Note that web site addresses of organisations and on-line publications can be found in Chapters 2 and 4.

This 16 minutes film deals with many abuses suffered by children throughout the world and documents the UN’s effort to bring about universal standards for human rights through the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Amnesty Interactive: A history and atlas of human rights. CD-ROM. Language: English.

Animated cartoon video on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Video. Languages: English, French, Spanish.

For Every Child, A Better World. Video. United Nations. New York: Muppets Press/Golden Books, 1994. Language: English.

Children’s storybook with Sesame Street characters relating basic human rights concerns.

This video focuses on the plight of abused children around the world and the United Nation’s efforts to create universal standards of fairness through the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Part I includes five films (each 15 minutes) about the philosophical foundations of human rights: dignity, liberty, equality, limits of power, rule of law. Part II includes five films (each 15 minutes) analysing specific rights: the right to life, freedom of speech, freedom of association and gathering, right to privacy, right to ownership.

Hour-long documentary provides live footage, photographs, documents and presentations by human rights activists and former prisoners of conscience. The video is useful for secondary classrooms and comes with a teacher’s guide.

Public television series narrated by Charlayne Hunter-Gault addressing human rights concerns around the world.

Women Hold Up The Sky. Eight short training videos for learning about CEDAW. New York: PDHRE, 1999

Languages: English, French, and Spanish. Accompanied by the manual "Between their stories and our realities..."

A compelling series of 8 short film training videos on women's human rights. Together with the manual the eight short films bring the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women "CEDAW" alive for women and men around the world. These engaging true stories are rendered in short narrative dramas which capture and celebrate the complexity, strength and vibrant determination of women living in a globalised, patriarchal world. Four NGO's acted as producers: Instituto de Género, Derecho y Desarrollo, Rosario, Argentina; NGO Resource Center, Zanzibar, Tanzania; TOSTAN of Senegal and PDHRE.
