Marking Human Rights Day with launch of Four Freedoms Program

Today the world marks Human Rights Day. On 10 December 1948 the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Declaration has become a contract between governments and their peoples that outlines the fundamental human rights and freedoms everywhere in the world.

Today, as we look back on this epic day in 1948, we  acknowledge the critical role of two individuals in the human rights movement. The UDHR was inspired by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four freedoms speech in 1941: the freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear. It was Eleanor Roosevelt who subsequently championed these fundamental rights and freedoms as chair of the committee that drafted the UDHR.

Today, HREA is extremely proud to announce the Four Freedoms Summer Program, a collaboration with the University College Roosevelt (UCR). The Four Freedoms Summer Program is an annual series of human rights courses for students and practitioners that encapsulates the Roosevelts’ fundamental values of human rights and global citizenship. The first edition will take place at the UCR campus in Middelburg, the Netherlands from 23 June-10 July 2015. You can learn more about the Four Freedoms Summer Program at www.hrea.org/four-freedoms.
