1. INSTITUTE ON WOMEN'S HUMAN RIGHTS TO CONVENE IN CANADA Offered by
the Center for Women's Studies in Education of the Ontario Institute
for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, Canada from May 22
to June 29, 2007, this human rights institute will expose
participants to human rights standards set by the United Nations and
enable them to deliver human rights education in their own countries
and contexts. Speakers will address the organizing efforts of women
as they advocated to establish important international milestones
like the United Nation’s Convention on the Elimination of All
Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), Declaration on the
Rights of Indigenous Peoples, African Protocol on Women’s
Rights, Security Council Resolution 1325, Beijing Platform for
Action, and Women’s Action Agenda 21, will be featured. They
will also explore the potential of these international conventions
and policies as tools for social change, and highlight how they can
be used to bring about real progress on the ground. Alda Facio, Peggy
Antrobus and Mònica Muñoz-Vargas will be among the
faculty. 

Applications for this six-week institute must be sent in by February

2. CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR 2007 PERDITA HUSTON HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD
Applications are invited for the 2007 Perdita Huston Human Rights
award, a $10,000 annual prize that recognizes an outstanding advocate
for women’s rights in the Third World. This award honours the
extraordinary life and activism of journalist and author Perdita
Huston who worked tirelessly to give voice and visibility to rural
women. In 2006, the award went to Dr. Sunitha Krishnan, the founder
of an organization that fights trafficking in India by rescuing,
rehabilitating and supporting trafficked women and girls. 

- ELIGIBLITY & SELECTION PROCESS 
Any woman or man whose work continues Perdita Huston’s work of
reaching women of the Third World, giving them a voice and empowering
them. The selection process will evaluate the applicant’s
vision, efforts to empower women and her or his accomplishments in
this regard. 

- NOMINATION PROCESS 
Anyone may nominate an individual whose life and work reflect the
vision, compassion and commitment of the life and work of Perdita
Huston and whose work continues the advocacy for, and empowerment of
women. 
Self-nominations are encouraged. The Selection Committee will notify
semi-finalists by early March 2005. Not all submissions will receive
notice at that time. The Awardee and nine finalists will receive
notice in early April, 2005. The ten finalists will receive
recognition of their achievements on the Perdita Huston Human Rights
Award website. All nominations must be submitted on the nomination
form and must include the following information: 
1. Nominee's name, address, telephone number, e-mail and place of
work. 
2. Nominator's name, address, telephone number and e-mail. 
3. A description (not to exceed 3 pages) of the life and work of the
nominee, the impact of the nominee's activities and the reasons why
the nominee should be recognized with the Perdita Huston Human Rights
Award. 

4. The nomination form with no more than two additional typed, pages
supporting the nomination statement. A maximum of two additional
supporting items may include press clippings, pamphlets and/or
photographs. All nomination materials may be used for publication and
will not be returned.

3. WANTED! CHILDREN’S OPINIONS 0N HOW TO STOP VIOLENCE &
DISCRIMINATION AGAINST GIRLS The Working Group on Girls and
UNICEF’s Voices of Youth is soliciting the opinions of children
about a report released by the Expert Group Meeting on the
Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination and Violence Against the
Girl Child. Available in a youth-friendly version with a
facilitator’s guide for those who wish to conduct focus groups
with children on the issue, the report outlines the strategies and
recommendations made by the expert group on how to protect girls and
improve their lives. An online questionnaire is also included and
responses collected by the January 30 deadline will be presented at
the 51st Commission on the Status of Women in New York in
February-March 2007.

4. APPLICATIONS REQUESTED FOR 2007-2008 WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME 

The Women’s Leadership Scholarship Programme (formerly the
Native Leadership Scholarship) is accepting applications from women
grassroots leaders, organisers and activists from the global south
and/or from indigenous groups, who wish to pursue non-doctoral
graduate studies in human rights, sustainable development, and public
health at accredited institutions worldwide. Committed to supporting
study, research and leadership development among innovative and
effective women, the programme will award four to eight scholarships
of $25,000 each year, for a maximum of two years, to enable
recipients meet the costs for tuition, fees, books, educational
supplies, housing, maintenance, and travel to and from the home
country and the educational institution. 

Applicants should have at least three years experience working with
critical human rights issues, be committed to grassroots organizing
and have been accepted to an institution of higher education for
graduate study in a field related to their work. Pre-application
forms must be submitted by March 23, 2007, and the top 12-15
candidates will be submit more detailed scholarship requests, with
all supporting documentation.
