Call for cases for AI's Campaign to Stop Violence Against Women

Dear Colleagues,

As you may know, in March 2004 Amnesty International (AI) launched an
international Campaign to Stop Violence Against Women. Currently, we are
urgently seeking more cases and stories for the campaign. Do you know of
a case or cases concerning family or community violence against women or
violence against women during conflict or in a post-conflict period? If
so, would the woman or her designated representative(s) be interested in
having AI campaign on the case? In conjunction with the launch of the
Stop Violence Against Women Campaign on March 5, AI issued eight appeal
cases - already thousands of letters have been sent to those governments in
response to the AI appeals.

The campaign includes a focus on women who have been targeted not just
because they are women, but who are also targeted because of their sexual
identity, race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, or class. AI has had
some particular challenges in developing cases of women who have been
attacked because they are lesbian, bisexual, or transgender - if you can
forward on knowledge of any cases that might be appropriate to the Campaign
Team at our London headquarters, we would greatly appreciate it. AI
research staff will contact the survivor or a representative to explain the
process and obtain consent (please see below for further information on
securing consent).

For more information, please see the announcement at:

Please send cases, suggestions, or questions to: svawteam@amnesty.org

Thank you in advance for your participation.

-------------
NOTE: Securing a survivor's consent means:
a. Explaining to her and/or her designated representatives (NGOs,
lawyers and families working on her behalf) that her story will be
publicized widely in many parts of the world and will be the subject of
many letters generated to the authorities as well as support for her case,
if appropriate;
b. We will not expose her real identity unless she advises otherwise;
c. We will not describe her experiences in any way that would further
stigmatize or endanger herself, family, friends, or colleagues.
