Ukraine joins the campaign "16 Days of Activism against gender violence"

UKRAINE JOINS THE CAMPAIGN "16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER VIOLENCE"

The "16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence" international campaign
will be held in Ukraine on November 25 - December 10 for the fourth time.
The goals of the 2003 Campaign in Ukraine are to attract community
attention to two urgent issues - domestic violence and human trafficking;
to strengthen activities of public organizations and government agencies
in violence prevention; to protect women's rights in Ukraine, and to
create non-violent ideology in our society.

In July 1991, the Center for Women's Global Leadership and members of the
Forum on Women, Violence and Human Rights initiated the "16 Days of
Activism against Gender Violence" global campaign.

Since then, more than 1000 organizations from 100 countries all over the
world participated in the "16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence"
campaigns, ensuring elimination of all forms of violence against women. In
2001 this annual Campaign celebrated its tenth anniversary.

Ukraine joined the "16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence" in 2000.
Already in 2001 the Campaign moved to the national level, having unified
20 oblasts of Ukraine and 75 government agencies and non-governmental
organizations. And in 2002 more than 400 government and non-governmental
organizations conducted events within the framework of the Campaign.

Trainings, round tables, discussions and debates, seminars and lectures,
exhibitions, broadcasts of educational programs, conferences, public
hearings and other events are held as a part of the Campaign.
Winrock International together with the State Committee of Ukraine for
Family and Youth Affairs provide information support for the 2003 Campaign
in Ukraine.

The key dates of the "16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence"
Campaign are:

 November 25 - International Day Against Violence Against Women,
this day was chosen to commemorate the violent assassination of the
Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa) on November 25, 1960 by
the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic.

 December 1 - the World AIDS Day. World AIDS Day serves to
strengthen the global effort to face the challenges of the AIDS pandemic.

 December 6 - the anniversary of "The Montreal Massacre", when 14
female students were murdered by 25 year-old man, Marc Lepine, who
believed it was because of women students that he was not accepted to the
engineering school.

 December 10 - International Human Rights Day. On December 10
peoples and states the world over celebrate the adoption, in 1948, of the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Non-governmental organizations, government agencies, mass media and
interested persons from all sectors of civil society are invited to join
the "16 days of Activism Against Gender Violence - 2003" Campaign!
