Dear colleagues, I am Irene R. Chia, Media, Information and Communications Programme Associate of Isis International-Manila. Isis International-Manila is a feminist NGO dedicated to women's information and communication needs. We document ideas and visions, create channels to communicate, collect and move information, and network and build links. We focus on those advancing women's rights, leadership and empowerment in Asia and the Pacific. Isis publishes Women in Action, a magazine that comes out three times a year covers a broad range of issues affecting women globally, but focusing on the particular needs and concerns of women in the Global South, and forwarding a progressive perspective tempered by the experiences of the third world women's movements. The No. 3 issue for 2003 of Women in Action will carry the theme "Women in Prisons." We are looking for writers to contribute in this issue of our magazine. Chia Media, Information and Communication Services Programme Associate --- Call for Articles for Women in Action (WIA) No. 3-2003 Women in Action, a magazine published by Isis International-Manila, covers a broad range of issues affecting women globally, but focusing on the particular needs and concerns of women in the Global South. For its next issue, Women in Action will feature the theme "Women in Prisons." We welcome articles on the following topics: 1. stories of Asian and Pacific women who are imprisoned for their political or religious beliefs, actions or affiliations or for their sexual orientation; prison systems as a way of crushing resistance or rebellion or as a form of social control of Asian and Pacific women 2. prison activism or organising of Asian and Pacific women in prisons 3. how the prison system institutionalises and perpetuates class, race and gender oppression; how legislation discriminates against colored women; how legislation is applied in a discriminatory way against colored women 4. writings of Asian and Pacific women in prisons 5. "rehabilitation," reentry or reintegration of women prisoners into society; programmes for women while inside the prisons; stories of reintegration of women into society 6. prisons and capitalism; prisons as a source of cheap labour; prisons as business ventures; stories of small businesses in prisons run by women inmates 7. how information and communciation techologies (ICT) mediates in the lives of women prisoners; how ICT has been of use or support to women 8. how media portrays and reinforces stereotypes of women prisoners We welcome photo essays or photo submissions on women in prisons. We also welcome articles for our regular sections on women and media, women and health, and women and information and communication technology (ICT). If you would like to submit photos, graphics or comic strips that may be used for your article or for these issues, you may also do so. We provide a modest honorarium for articles and photos or graphics that get published. Photos or artwork should be in tif format, scanned at 300 dpi. Please zip the file before e-mailing it. You may also send it by post. Articles should be within 1,500 - 2,000 word range. Deadline for submission is July 31, 2003. When submitting an article, please indicate on the Subject line what issue of Women in Action your submission is for.
