Following are brief descriptions of a selection of the numerous and
diverse activities taking place worldwide on and around International
Women's Day:
Australia, Sydney, March 8: Women Against War and Racism March. Contact:

Barbados, St. Michael, March 8 and 9: Women in Excellence Exhibition and
Trade Show featuring 50 years of women's achievement. Organized by:
National Organization of Women in Barbados.
Canada, Ottawa: International Women's Week celebrations (March 2-8) with
a variety of events on the theme: Worldwide Women: Surfing the Digital

Toronto, March 8: An event celebrating the achievements of women of
color through interviews and music which will also be broadcast on
University of Toronto Radio. Contact: babaehmama@yahoo.ca
Israel, Jerusalem, March 8: Israeli-Palestinian Healing Quilt: Israeli
and Palestinian women who have been creating a Healing Quilt will be
gathering to begin sewing the individual pieces together and to discuss
how the Quilt will be used or displayed.
Italy, La Spezia, March 8: International Women's Day Celebration
booths, crafts, march. All proceeds to go to the Revolutionary
Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA).
Mexico, Mexico City, March 8: Performance art and public presence of
women´s groups at the Centro Historico de Mexico. Opening and closing
with Sacred Feminine invocation and guided meditation.
Singapore, March 8: Forum "Empowering Women for Life"; and "HerStory of
Singapore" exhibition. For more details:

United Arab Emirates, Sharjah, March 8: A celebration of music, stories,
songs, and art with the intention of peace and harmony for all.
USA, New York, March 8: "No War" March in Solidarity with the Women of
Iraq on International Women's Day. For more details:

New York, March 8: "Women as Society Builders" at the American Museum of
Natural History. Organized by the NGO Committee on the Status of Women
as part of the UN Commission on the Status of Women activities. For more

San Francisco, March 8: Women of the World: A Global Exhibition of Art
(March 8-April 13) inaugural echibit of the International Museum of

Washington DC, March 8: "Women Say No to War" March 8 rally and march to

Vanuatu, Port Vila, March 8: A march of celebration followed by various
events, including human rights reports and launch of "What Makes a
Successful Woman" poster. Organized by the Vanuatu Women's Centre.
Zimbabwe, Bulawayo and Harare: Celebrations from March 7-14 involve
discussions on women, poverty and hunger; HIV/AIDS; malaria and women's

Following are descriptions of activities global in scope:
The 4th Global Women's Strike, March 8: Invest in Caring Not Killing
The strike's key demands are payment for all caring work -- in wages,
pensions, land and other resources. In addition, several of the
activities this year include anti-war demonstrations in at least 60
countries. Organized by: Crossroads Women's Centre in the UK. For

United Nations Headquarters, New York, March 5: Women Say "Yes" to
Disarmament by Peaceful Means: On the occasion of the 47th session of
the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the Working Group on
Women, Peace and Security presented a petition to the Security Council
to request a peaceful settlement to the situation with Iraq. The
statement was signed by 216 participants at the CSW. For more details

United Nations Headquarters, New York, March 7: International Women's
Day was celebrated at the UN headquarters and speeches were made on the
theme "Gender Equality and the Millennium Development Goals." A
