Violence against Women in the name of Honor

Killing in the name of Honor in Sindh - Number decreased during 2002-


This statistics were issued by "Citizens' Action Committee for Women 
Rights" Hyderabad. The "Citizens' Action Committee for Women Rights" are 
working in 60 districts of Pakistan in collaboration with AURAT FOUNDATION. 
The statistics were presented in the seminar on "Violence against Women" on 
December 31, 2002. In the seminar the role of Media especially Sindhi Media 
was appreciated.

In the seminar speakers recommended effective legislation and monitoring 
systems during the investigation of violence cases by police.


According to the data collected, 382 people have been killed under the 
pretext of Karo-Kari in the province, of which 245 were female and 137 were 
male.

Jacobabad district remained on top, as usual, where 91 people had been 
killed during the year, followed by Ghotki 67, Larkana 62 and Shikarpur 57.

50 per cent women were killed by their husbands, while the rest by either 
their father or brothers.

In 40 per cent cases, the weapon used was Gun, 41 percent was TT Pistol, in 
15 per cent axe, and in 10 per cent cases weapon used was Kalashnikov.

30 per cent Karo Kari victims were related to each other and were 
victimized because of personal enmity while in 70 per cent cases land and 
matrimonial matters remained the motive behind these killings.

In 1998, 473 people had been killed, in 1999, 510, in 2000, 435 and in 
2001, 460 people had been killed.

>From the year 1998 to 2002 a total of 2260 people have been killed of 
which 1447 were women while 813 were men.
