TO: ACLU Action Network Members FR: Angela Colaiuta, National Field Organizer DT: 10-30-02 1) Support Gender Equity in Education: Protect Title IX! In an action that many fear is designed to undo the great strides women have made in athletics, the Bush Administration has appointed a commission to consider possible changes to landmark legislation designed 30 years ago to end gender discrimination in sports and education. The Bush Administration's new commission is now traveling around the country listening to public feedback about Title IX, a groundbreaking 1972 law that bars sex discrimination in educational institutions. Title IX applies to educational institutions that receive any federal funds - whether public or private, including private colleges that receive federal funding through federal financial aide programs used by their students. Unfortunately, the commission is receiving many baseless complaints that Title IX harms men's athletics. It must hear more from people like the athletic director of the University of North Carolina who told the commission that "too much progress has been made toward gender equity in sports -- and too much remains to be done -- to give up on Title IX now." Take Action! You can learn more and send a FREE FAX to the Commission urging them to oppose any changes to Title IX from our action alert at: http://www.aclu.org/WomensRights/WomensRights.cfm?ID=11109&c=172
