Dear Friends, A small correction to our last email concerning the second anniversary of the adoption of Security Council resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. The resolution itself was adopted on 31 October 2000 so this Thursday, 31 October 2002, is the actual anniversary.(This is important to note for all our witch friends as it is Halloween here in New York and many other places!) The Security Council held an Arria Formula meeting with the NGO Working Group on Wednesday 23 October 2002 as part of its observation of this event and to discuss further ways of implementing the resolution. It will hold an Open Debate on the issue on Monday at 3 p.m. NY time. So far, 37 countries have indicated they will speak to the Council on the issue. As many will know, the resolution was the first ever in the Council dealing solely with the issue of Women, Peace and Security. This took more than 50 years. While we know the presence of women in peacebuilding and conflict resolution has always been a legitimate demand, the resolution has raised the visibility of the need for women's voices in these processes. Please tune in to FIRE (www.fire.or.cr) for a replay of the NGO press conference which was held on Wednesday, 23 October, and for a live webcast of the Security Council's debate on the issue of Women, Peace and Security on Monday at 3 p.m. NY Time. And Happy Halloween from all the NGW's (Non-Governmental Witches) making life at least a little more difficult for the Security Council here in New York.
