Council of Europe conference plans peacemaking role for women



Strasbourg, 12.06.2002 - European equality ministers are to meet for a
Council of Europe conference in Skopje on the role of women in peacemaking
and conflict prevention. (20 and 21 June, Alexandar Palace Hotel.)

The aim of the conference is to draw up policy guidelines to promote gender
equality. It will also look at the issue of women's participation in the
decision-making process, the problem of trafficking of human beings and
building an effective framework for the promotion of gender equality.

Ministers will share experiences from their own countries, with a focus on
areas such as the Balkans, Caucasus and Northern Ireland where women have
played a central role.

Macedonian Prime Minister Ljubcho Georgievski and Council of Europe
Secretary General Walter Schwimmer will open the conference on Thursday
morning at 9h30. Mr Schwimmer will give a press conference at 10h15.
