POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT - EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DEADLINE: October 31, 2003 The Mental Disability Advocacy Center (MDAC), a non-profit, legal advocacy organization working on behalf of people with mental disabilities, seeks an Executive Director. The organization is located in Budapest, Hungary. MDAC operates primarily in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Through support for litigation, monitoring, reporting, advocacy and training, MDAC promotes the human rights of persons with developmental disabilities and mental illness, along with the rights of their families. Recent activities of the organization include provision of financial and technical support for litigation on behalf of persons with mental disabilities before both national courts and the European Court of Human Rights; reports and advocacy on abuses in closed institutions; and training of lawyers and activists in international legal protections for persons with mental disabilities. The Executive Director is responsible for all aspects of management of the organization, including fundraising, program activity, financial reporting and human resources. The Executive Director reports to a multinational Board of Directors consisting of lawyers and human rights and mental disability activists. With the assistance of the Board, the Executive Director charts the strategic direction of the organization and represents the organization before international organizations, national governments, donors, the media and the general public. Qualifications Applicant must have a thorough knowledge of international human rights law and practice and at least five years' experience working in the field of human rights. Other requirements include substantial managerial and fundraising experience, strong English and communication skills, and a commitment to the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with mental disabilities. Background and experience in the areas of law and mental disabilities is preferred, as is regional experience in Central and Eastern Europe or the former Soviet Union.
