Become a human rights observer with Peace Brigades International! Peace Brigades International supports efforts for justice and human rights through nonviolent action. PBI fields teams of unarmed international observers to offer protective accompaniment of threatened activists in conflictive countries such as Colombia, Guatemala, Indonesia, and Mexico. July, 2002: We are currently looking for project volunteer candidates for our Mexico, Colombia, and Guatemala Projects. Basic requirements: - Commitment to nonviolence and non-partisanship - Age of at least 25 years old (or will be 25 shortly) - Prepared to make a 1 year commitment - Fluency in Spanish Additional qualities we're looking for: - Working knowledge of the country - Overseas, human rights NGO, and / or conflict resolution experience - Ability to work well within a team setting & consensus decision-making skills - Experience carrying out public relations with high-level offices PBI provides: - Full and comprehensive training by a team of professionals - Round trip travel to country - All in-country expenses including housing, food, travel, and health insurance - Monthly stipend - One year of field experience, including close contact with human rights defenders, local communities, and international actors such as embassies and the U.N. Training and Selection Process: For our projects in Latin America, the training and selection process is carried out in Spanish. All candidates must submit a detailed application form accompanied by three references. This is followed by a telephone interview, prior to acceptance to our week-long training sessions. Field volunteers are then invited from the pool of trainees. Attending the training does not guarantee an invitation. Upcoming PBI Orientation Weekend in Washington, DC: Over the weekend of August 24th and 25th, PBI/USA will be hosting an Orientation Weekend in Washington, DC. The program is designed for individuals looking at potentially volunteering with PBI in any of our four current field projects (Colombia, Guatemala, Indonesia, and Mexico). Others with a general interest in PBI are also invited to attend. The program will include an introduction to PBI's work and philosophy, overviews of our field projects, and personal experiences shared by former field volunteers. $20 registration fee includes information packet and lunches. Upcoming PBI project trainings in North America: **PBI Mexico Project** After years of working in Chiapas as a part of the SIPAZ coalition, PBI established its own Mexico Project in 1999. Following the assassination of human rights lawyer Digna Ochoa in October of 2001, requests for PBI 's presence have multiplied. PBI currently accompanies some of Mexico's most respected human rights defenders in Mexico City and the state of Guerrero, including Edgar Cortes of the Centro Prodh and Abel Barrera. The project has expanded to include four permanent sub-teams and an average of 38 international volunteers in the field. Accompanied groups and communities include the Lawyer's Collective 'José Alvear Restrepo,' the Popular Women's Organization (OFP), and the Community of Peace San José de Apartadó. Following a 16-year presence, the PBI Guatemala Project closed its doors in early 1999. Since early 2000, however, political violence has re-surged, creating new demands for international accompaniment. As of late summer 2002, PBI will have re-established a presence and will need qualified volunteers thereafter.
