WOMEN'S STUDIES INTERNATIONAL FORUM, vol 14, nos 1/2, pp. 37-47, 1991
has an article that I co-authored, "The Gender-Specific Terror of El 
Salvador and
Guatemala."  Both the article and its bibliography should be helpful to your
purpose.  I think if you confine your topic to SYSTEMATIZED or 
STATE-SPONSORED abuse, you will find it more manageable.  You might want to
look at the Introduction and the first few chapters of WRITINGS FOR A
LIBERATION PSYCHOLOGY, by Ignacio Martin-Baro (Harvard, 1994).  In NYC
you might want to track down Henrietta Shannon, also a graduate student, with
