Dear list members,
Below is a letter delivered to the White House this morning. It would be
most helpful if you would send it on to colleagues and friends, use it to
write to your local newspaper editor, etc.
Thanks for your help.

Dear Mr. President,
Psychologists for Social Responsibility (PsySR) is an organization of
social scientists and mental health professionals devoted to peace and social
justice. We are writing you to urge a halt in the bombing during Ramadan and
here's why:
We realize from the USA perspective the war is not against Islam, but in the
minds of many moderate Muslims around the world there is uncertainty whether
or not this is a war against Islam. We urge our government to avoid putting
us in a position that would allow our detractors to brand our actions a war
against Islam and in the process turn more than one billion people against
us.
Furthermore, a pause in the bombing would allow vital emergency food
assistance to be delivered to the innocent Afghani people. Such a move would
be consistent with the spirit of Ramadan with its emphasis on the plight of
those who are hungry, and allay the possibility of further loss of life being
blamed on U.S. bombing.
Therefore, in the interest of our national security, we urge a halt in
bombing and an increase in humanitarian assistance during Ramadan.
Sincerely,
Deborah DuNann Winter, Ph.D.
President
