CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2002 MARTIN ENNALS AWARD FOR HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS (MEA) Dear colleagues and friends, The Martin Ennals Award invites nominations for its 2002 Award. The deadline is 15 October 2001. Nominees must currently be involved in human rights work. Special account is taken of those who have demonstrated an active record of combating human rights violations by courageous and innovative means. The MEA encourages in particular those who are working in conditions hostile to fundamental human rights and who are in need of protection. The value of the annual Award is 20'000 Swiss Francs, to be used for further work in the field of human rights. The 2002 award ceremony is planned to be held at the North-South Media Festival in Geneva (at the time of the UN Commission on Human Rights.). The following organisations constitute the Jury: Amnesty International, Defence for Children International (DCI), Human Rights Desk of Diakonie Germany, Human Rights Watch (HRW), Human Rights Information and Documentation Systems, International (HURIDOCS), International Alert, International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH), International Service for Human Rights (ISHR), and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT). Samuel Ruiz Garcia (Mexico), 1996: Clement Nwankwo (Nigeria), 1995: Asma Jahangir (Pakistan), 1994: Harry Wu (China). Martin Ennals (1927-1991) was instrumental to the modern human rights movement. A fiercely devoted activist, he creatively pursued ideas ahead of his time as the first Secretary-General of Amnesty International and was the driving force behind ten other organisations. His deep desire was to see more cooperation and solidarity among NGOs.
