Subject: [globalyouthconnect] Practical Strategies for Local Human Rights Groups

The Center For Sustainable Human Rights Action (CeSHRA), formerly The
Human Rights Program of the Fund for Peace, is pleased to announce the
recent publication of a new manual, Practical Strategies for Local Human
Rights Groups, in both Spanish and English. Translations in French and
Arabic are expected.

This handbook shares strategies used by human rights organizations and
activists for survival in hostile environments, dealing with obstacles
such as harassment, threats and violence. In 1998, after fourteen years
of deliberation, a Human Rights Defenders Declaration was adopted by the
United Nations. In solidarity with this important move and in recognition
of the daily struggles of activists who promote and defend human rights,
we offer these strategies for increasing personal security and
organizational sustainability.

Through case studies and examples from around the world, Practical
Strategies deals with the following issues, information and resources:

Chapter 1: Coping Mechanisms
*Determining Courses of Action
*Protection
*Generating Publicity
*Utilizing the Courts
*Responding to Efforts to Discredit Local Groups
*Protection Against Surveillance

Chapter 2: Building Protective Alliances
*Local Non-Government Organizations
*Local Authorities
*Other Local Allies
*Local Religious Institutions
*National Human Rights Institutions
*Regional Networks

Chapter 3: International Options and Resources
*International Organizations
*Trial Monitors
*Donors
*Foreign Embassies
*United Nations Resources and Procedures

Chapter 4: Emergency Procedures and Resources

Chapter 5: A Comprehensive Case Study

Appendices
*Publications
*Non-Governmental Organizations
*United Nations and Regional Human Rights Mechanisms
*Internet Human Rights Sources and Electronic Training
Resources
