Discussion topics for IPEDEHP case study

This e-mail is designed to launch our first discussion. It addresses: (1)
guidance for accessing the IPEDEHP case study, which will serve as the
focus of this first discussion; and (2) a list of topics to launch this
initial discussion:

1. GUIDANCE FOR ACCESSING THE PERU HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION CASE STUDY

There are four options for accessing the Peru human rights education study
that will form the basis for our first discussion:

15 PAGE SUMMARY (in English)

(a) Ask to receive the 15 page summary as a file attach by e-mail or by
fax (for which I will need your fax number). Please let me know if you
would like to receive the summary in Word or in Word Perfect 5.1 for DOS,
which is a good bridge language.

(b) Access the 15 page summary, in English, through the Internet at:

http://www.human-rights.net/IPEDEHP/study_english/summary_english.html

FULL REPORT (in English and Spanish)

(c) Request the full report from me (in either English or Spanish) and
how you want me to send it to you (Word or Word Perfect).

(d) Access the full report (either in English or Spanish) through the
Internet at:

http://www.human-rights.net/IPEDEHP/study_english
 (English version)
http://www.human-rights.net/IPEDEHP/study_spanish
 (Spanish version)

If you opt for the full report, you have the choice of reading the whole
document (70 pages plus annexes) or focusing on chapters of interest.
Given the objectives of our discussion group, I would recommend, in
particular: Chapter III (context in which IPEDEHP was established and
evolved); Chapter IV (methodology for doing the case study); Chapter V
(history and evolution of IPEDEHP and its philosophy including how IPEDEHP
is seen within and outside of Peru); Chapter VI (an attempt to
describe--as a participant--IPEDEHP's training program for community
leaders which is the focus of this case study); and Chapter VII (results
of the field study).

If you can't access the documents via the World Wide Web PLEASE let me
know, as soon as possible,

-- if you would like to receive the summary as a file attach (Word or
Word Perfect), or whether you want to have it faxed to you (along with your
fax number).

-- if you would like me to send you the full report an e-mail attachment
and, if so: what language you want it in (English or Spanish) and whether
you want it in Word or Word Perfect.

2. TOPICS TO LAUNCH THE DISCUSSION OF THE IPEDEHP CASE

I suggest that we start our discussion of the IPEDEHP case with five
topics. As the discussion evolves, I'm sure other questions/topics will
surface.

(a) Your overall reaction to the case study: IPEDEHP's methodology; the
methodology used to collect data on the impact of the IPEDEHP community
leaders program.

(b) Based on your knowledge/experience, why you think that for some of
the community leaders I interviewed (especially women) receiving IPEDEHP
training and follow-up and returning to their communities to apply what
they learned has transformed their lives.

(c) The applicability of the IPEDEHP approach as a means of empowering
people living in conflict/post-conflict societies and assisting them to
defend their rights and those of others.

(d) Those aspects of the approach used by IPEDEHP that you believe are
applicable in your country/society and those which are not.

(e) Lessons learned from the IPEDEHP case that help inform a key
objective of our discussion group:

-- how the application of principles and practices from psychology (among
others, the insertion of a strong affective/therapeutic element into the
training and considering the trainee as an integral being who operates
within the context of a broader societal reality) can contribute to the
effectiveness of a human rights program designed and implemented in a
society that has been affected by conflict.

Needless to say, any other insights/comments that go beyond the purview of
these five topics are welcomed.

As we are currently just getting launched (and especially since some of
you may not be able to access the document immediately) I suggest that for
this first discussion we give ourselves until May 10 to respond to the
above questions. Of course, anyone who wants to respond earlier is more
than welcome to do so!

Warm regards and, again, welcome!

Marcy Bernbaum
