Dear friends I am writing to all of you in the hope that you might know someone, or be able to pass this onto someone, who would be interested in working on a brand new initiative with WITNESS and Global Voices. We are looking for a part-time human rights video editor (or vlogger if you know the speak) who can be based anywhere in the world and would be willing to work at least 10 hours a week on a short-term basis for our pilot project. In short, the person would be responsible for curating and aggregating online human rights videos from various sources and providing editorial and contextual information on those videos in a blog like format. We are very focused on engaging someone who is well-versed in human rights issues as well as the blogosphere. I am attaching the job description so please do pass it on to anyone you think might be interested. We are hiring asap so if someone is interested, they should forward their application immediately. Applicants should be able to answer yes to most of, it not all of, the questions below. - Are you a human rights activist, engaged in the global on-line human rights community and familiar with human rights groups and issues around the world or in a particular region. - Is the web your main tool for information gathering? Do you relish seeking information that is not in the main stream media and often go to multiple online sources to verify a fact? - Do you have experience with online communication and web publishing tools, do most of your communications electronically, or have no qualms about learning and using new web applications on the job? - Are you an experienced blogger and are you familiar with the techniques of videoblogging? - Are you a user of and do you have a basic understanding of new video-sharing services such as YouTube, Google Video, and others? - Have you had exposure to video and film being used in communication and advocacy contexts? - Are you proficient in a language in addition to English? Many thanks, Violeta ----- WITNESS Human Rights Video Hub Editor: WITNESS uses the power of video to open the eyes of the world to human rights abuses. By partnering with local organizations around the globe, WITNESS empowers human rights defenders to use video to shine a light on those most affected by human rights violations, and to transform personal stories of abuse into powerful tools of justice. Over the past decade, WITNESS has partnered with more than 200 groups in 50 countries, bringing often unseen images, untold stories and seldom heard voices to the attention of key decision makers, the media, and the general public – catalyzing grassroots activism, political engagement, and lasting change. WITNESS is in the process of developing a participatory website - the Video Hub, where anyone with human rights related footage can upload video that can be used to create change. Using technologies such as cell phones and other mobile devices, web-based video upload and content distribution, online community building, advocacy and organizational tools, the Video Hub will provide new opportunities to feed the populist shift toward user-generated content with media in the service of global human rights advocacy. The first step towards developing the Video Hub will be to establish a Video section within the global citizens media website, Global Voices Online (www.globalvoicesonline.org). This work will be carried out in coordination with both WITNESS staff as well as the Global Voices Online editorial team. Lessons learned from this experience with Global Voices Online will then be applied to the development of the standalone Video Hub website.
