Reporters without Borders/Reporters sans frontières Press release 20 July 2006 INDONESIA ONLINE NEWSPAPER EDITOR JAILED FOR POSTING MOHAMMED CARTOONS LAST FEBRUARY Reporters Without Borders today roundly condemned the arrest yesterday of Teguh Santosa, editor of the news website Rakyat Merdeka Online, for his decision on 2 February to post three of the controversial cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed that were published by the Danish newspaper Jylland Posten last October. He is being held in a prison in Jakarta. "Santosa did not reproduce these cartoons in order to provoke," the press freedom organisation said. "He did it with the aim of providing information, and his apologies are evidence of this. We call for his immediate release and the withdrawal of the charges, which are completely unjustified." In response to a wave of protests, Santosa publicly apologised to Indonesian Muslims and removed the cartoons from his site the day after he posted them. He was summoned yesterday to the Jakarta prosecutor's office, where he was questioned for three hours and charged under articles 156 and 156 a of the criminal code with "publicly expressing a feeling of hostility and hatred towards a religious group." After being threatened with more severe charges if he contested the accusation, he was taken to Jakarta's Cipinang prison. He faces up to five years in prison. The Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) insisted that Santosa had no desire to provoke Muslims when he posted the cartoons, and that his sole aim was to provide his readers with background to the controversy they had caused. He is the second Indonesian journalist to suffer consequences for reproducing the cartoons. David Da Silva, the editor of the Christian magazine Gloria, was fired by his employers in February. --------------- INDONÉSIE UN JOURNALISTE DÉTENU SUITE À LA PUBLICATION DE CARICATURES DU PROPHÈTE MAHOMET Le rédacteur en chef du journal en ligne Rakyat Merdeka Online, Teguh Santosa, est détenu depuis le 19 juillet 2006 dans une prison de Jakarta. Il est poursuivi en justice pour avoir publié les caricatures danoises du prophète Mahomet le 2 février 2006. Reporters sans frontières condamne fermement l'arrestation et l'inculpation de Teguh Santosa. "Le rédacteur en chef du journal n'a pas repris ces caricatures par provocation, ses excuses en témoignent, mais dans un souci d'information. Nous demandons sa libération immédiate et l'abandon des charges qui pèsent contre lui et qui n'ont aucune raison d'être", a déclaré l'organisation. Teguh Santosa, rédacteur en chef du Rakyat Merdeka Online, avait décidé le 2 février 2006 de publier trois des caricatures du prophète, parues dans le journal danois Jylland Posten en octobre 2005. Des protestations immédiates avaient poussé le journaliste à retirer les caricatures de son site et à présenter des excuses publiques aux musulmans indonésiens dès le lendemain. Le 19 juillet, il a été convoqué au bureau du procureur de Jakarta. Après un entretien de trois heures, il a été accusé d'avoir violé les articles 156 et 156a du code pénal indonésien en publiant ces caricatures. Après avoir été menacé de charges plus lourdes s'il contestait l'accusation, il a été conduit à la prison Cipinang de Jakarta. Teguh Santosa est passible de cinq ans de prison pour avoir "exprimé publiquement un sentiment d'hostilité et de haine contre un groupe religieux". Selon l'Association des journalistes indépendants (AJI), il n'avait nullement l'intention de provoquer les musulmans en publiant ces caricatures, mais seulement le souci d'informer ses lecteurs. Teguh Santosa est le deuxième journaliste indonésien ayant publié les caricatures à en subir les conséquences.
