OSCE Mission holds conference on Internet and information technology in Skopje



SKOPJE, 20 October 2005 - An international conference on information
technology and the Internet, supported by the OSCE Mission and the OSCE
Representative on Freedom of the Media, opened today in Skopje.

The event was initiated by the local non-governmental organization
Metamorphosis Foundation.

"New technologies offer a broad range of new opportunities," said
Ambassador Carlos Pais, Head of the Mission. "Online services can be an
excellent mechanism for the governmental decision making process to be
more interactive, effective and transparent."

Xhemali Mehazi, Minister of Transport and Communications, said: "We are
working on a new national strategy on development of electronic
communication - broadband strategy. Also our goal is the implementation of
the already adopted national strategy on the development of information
society."

Roland Bless, Senior Advisor to the Representative on the Freedom of
Media, focused on the importance of protecting the freedom of the
internet, particularly the freedom of the media, in accordance with OSCE
commitments and principles".

More technical expert discussions will take place in Ohrid, on cyber
crime, on October 25; in Skopje, on freedom of the media on the Internet,
on October 27; in Bitola, on e-government, on November 1; and in Tetovo,
on e-education, on November 2.

The materials of the conference are available on the web
({http://www.e-society.org.mk }) and will be published
in order to promote public awareness on internet development issues.
