in particular interesting for US based librarians Librarians and Human Rights: A Call for Participation July 20, 2005 For our forthcoming monograph, Universal Responsibility, Human Rights and Librarianship (Academic Press, 2006), we would like to include examples of librarians taking action. Our book will present a historical and cultural analysis of the role of librarians vis-a-vis human rights as defined by the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The authors will highlight the stated goals of the profession and the work of librarians and professional associations towards achieving a more equitable society in the United States. The article, “Human Rights and Librarians”; Reference and User Services Quarterly 45, Fall 2005: 21-24, will provide an overview. While we will be drawing from the written record we know that many of our colleagues are involved on a daily basis in the ongoing fight for peace, freedom, environmental and social justice. We hope that you will respond to this call so that we may include a chapter on the scope of librarians’ commitment. Our goal is a volume that will provide hope and inspiration by example.
