OPPORTUNITIES*

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, May 26 2005 -- For young people living in
poverty in  coastal Kenya, surfing the internet and learning how to use
computers make most sense when these skills mean better economic
opportunities and work-readiness. In recognition of this, the
Association for Progressive Communications (APC) announced on May 26
that the winner of the APC Africa Hafkin Communications Prize for 2004-5
is the *Global Education Partnership - Wundanyi* in Kenya.

"If it were not for GEP, I would not have learned to use a computer,"
Jostinah Wawasi, a former GEP student told APC. "After GEP I joined a
local university and majored in Economics. As a young woman living in
Wundanyi, Kenya, this was not a usual career. My GEP experience helped
me understand my talents and abilities. After graduation, I became a
consultant in Wundanyi for a major agriculture project where I have
helped my community members to set up savings and credit societies."

Global Education Partnership - Wundanyi (GEP) is a not-for-profit
organisation located in the Taita Taveta District of Kenya. It has
created a 12-week comprehensive training programme that focuses on
“entrepreneurship and work-readiness skills” for local youth from 15 to
24 years.

Taita Taveta is one of the poorest areas of Kenya with a poverty rate of
66% -- 10% higher than the national average.

In recognition of their vision and implementation, a six-member
international jury awarded the Kenyans the $7,500 USD award which is
named in honour of Nancy Hafkin, a pioneer of networking and development
information and communications in Africa.

In addition to recognising GEP, the judges awarded an honourable mention
to *BorgouNET* in Benin. BorgouNET has provided a number of towns in
North Benin with their only means of sending and receiving email to and
from the outside world, owing to the absence of telecommunications
infrastructures and the non-digitalisation of telephone lines.

ABOUT THE APC HAFKIN AFRICA COMMUNICATIONS PRIZE

The $7,500 USD APC Hafkin Prize - a biennial award - recognises
outstanding examples of African initiatives in information and
communications technology (ICTs) for development.

The Theme in 2004-5: Community initiatives that use the internet and
other digital communication networks to access markets, skills and
opportunities to derive real economic benefits.

JOHANNESBURG, Afrique du Sud, 26 mai 2005 – Pour les jeunes qui vivent
dans la pauvreté dans la région côtière du Kenya, naviguer sur internet
et apprendre à se servir d’un  ordinateur ne peut être utile que si ces
compétences représentent de meilleures conditions économiques et une
préparation au travail. C’est pourquoi l´Association pour le progrès des
communications (APC) a annoncé le 26 mais que le gagnant du Prix APC
Hafkin Communications en Afrique pour 2004-2005 est le *Global Education
Partnership – Wundanyi* au Kenya.

« Si ce n’était de GEP, je n’aurais pas appris à utiliser un ordinateur,
»  a dit à APC, Jostinah Wawasi – ancienne étudiante de GEP. « Après
GEP, je me suis inscrite à une université locale et obtenu un diplôme en
économie. Ce n’est pas une carrière habituelle pour une jeune femme de
Wundanyi. Mon expérience à GEP m’a aidé à comprendre mes talents et mes
capacités. Après avoir obtenu mon diplôme, je suis devenue consultante à
Wundanyi pour un grand projet agricole dans le cadre duquel j’ai aidé
les membres de ma communauté à établir des organismes d’épargne et de
crédit. »

Global Education Partnership - Wundanyi (GEP) est un organisme sans but
lucratif situé dans le district de Taita Taveta au Kenya qui a créé un
programme complet de formation de 12 semaines qui porte sur « La
création d’entreprise et la préparation au travail pour les jeunes entre
15 et 24 ans de la région.

Taita Taveta est une des régions les plus pauvres du Kenya où le taux de
pauvreté absolu est de 66% -- 10% de plus que la moyenne nationale.

En récompense de leur vision et de leur programme, un jury international
de six a accordé aux Kenyans le prix de 7 500 $ USD nommé en l’honneur
de Nancy Hafkin, une pionnière du réseautage et de l’information et de
la communication au service du développement en Afrique.

En plus de récompenser GEP, les juges ont accordé une mention honorable
à *BorgouNET* du Bénin. BorgouNET a fourni à un certain nombre de villes
du nord du Bénin leur seul moyen d’envoyer et de recevoir du courrier
dans le reste du monde, en raison de l’absence d’infrastructures de
télécommunications et de l’absence de numérisation des lignes
téléphoniques.

AU SUJET DU PRIX APC HAFKIN COMMUNICATIONS AFRIQUE

Le prix APC Hafkin de 7 500 USD – un prix bisannuel – reconnaît les
exemples remarques d’initiatives africaines dans le domaine des
technologies de l’information et de la communication (TIC) au service du
développement.

Le thème de 2004-2005 : Initiatives communautaires qui utilisent
internet et autres réseaux de communication numérique pour accéder aux
marchés, aux compétences et aux possibilités qui créent des avantages
économiques réels.
