Council of Europe spearheads e-voting experiment with European Schools

Strasbourg, 08.10.2004 - The Council of Europe is launching the first
e-voting exercise to decide a European Charter for democratic schools
without violence.

Eighty-two schools from nineteen countries (*) will take part in the
e-vote, which will be carried out over the Internet from classrooms. The
referendum – which has been organised by the Council with the help of the
Swiss Canton of Geneva – will take place from 11 to 22 October.

The results of the referendum will show if European schools agree or
disagree with the Charter, a seven-point statement drawn up by school
students from different countries. The Charter covers such principles as
the right to a safe and peaceful school, the right for everyone to have
equal treatment and the idea that conflicts should always be resolved in a
non-violent and constructive way.

If adopted, the Charter will act as a model for all of Europe's schools to
create democratic schooling without violence.
