Council of Europe calls for linguistic diversity on the Internet

Strasbourg, 24.09.2002 - On the eve of the European Day of Languages, a
Council of Europe initiative celebrated every year on 26 September, the
Secretary General of the Strasbourg-based Organisation, Walter Schwimmer,
underlined the importance of "life-long language learning", which is the
theme of this year's event. "To speak another person's language is to move
towards him, to remove barriers and fears. Language-learning and
communicating in different languages help us to promote the concept of
cultural diversity and mutual understanding on our continent", Mr Schwimmer
said.

In this context, he mentioned the Council of Europe's contribution towards
linguistic diversity on the internet. "The broader public already has
access to online information in all Council of Europe languages. We offer a
constantly up-dated online news service in the two official languages of the
Organisation, English and French. Within the framework of endeavours to
enlarge our web service, in the interest of 800 million Europeans, some
texts like conventions, etc, already exist in the languages of all member
countries. News portals in German, Russian and Italian are under way and
other languages will follow", the Secretary General concluded. Access to
information in different Council of Europe languages is available at
www.coe.int ("other languages").

A Council of Europe conference on "Languages, Diversity and Citizenship",
aiming at exploring ways in which language education policies can support
plurilingualism in Europe, will take place in Strasbourg from 13 to 15
November. Further details about this event can be obtained from www.coe.int
(Culture / Modern languages).
