++ UNESCO's Prep. for World Summit on Information Society

Source: http://comunica.org/mailman/listinfo/crisinfo_comunica.org

September 10, 2002 - An online platform providing information on
UNESCO's contribution to the preparation of the World Summit on the
Information Society (WSIS) is now at http://www.unesco.org/wsis. The
website provides data on UNESCO's numerous preparatory activities and
lists links to similar services of other organizations and national
governments.

WSIS, organized by the International Telecommunication Union Council
(ITU), in close cooperation with other UN Agencies, will be held in
December 2003 in Geneva, Switzerland, and in 2005 in Tunis, Tunisia.

UNESCO with its unique mandate to promote the free exchange of ideas
and knowledge plays a key role in the WSIS preparation. UNESCO's
contribution incorporates the ethical, legal and sociocultural
dimensions of the Information Society and helps to grasp the
opportunities offered by the ICTs by placing the individual at its
centre.

UNESCO encourages the broadest possible participation by
decision-makers, professional communities, representatives of civil
society, bilateral and multilateral partners and the private sector in
a debate on the conditions for the development of an information
society for all.
