***************************************************************** NUA INTERNET SURVEYS http://www.nua.com/surveys/ ******************************************************************* BBC Online Network: Hate spreads across the Internet 2002-07-10: The number of websites promoting violence and racism has risen dramatically following September 11, reports the BBC. This is according to a new report published by the Simon Wiesenthal Center. The report found that there are 3,300 'problematic' websites in existence, up from 2,600 a year ago. In particular, the number of Internet sites supporting suicide bombers has grown to around 100 since last year's terrorist attacks on the US. The Simon Wiesenthal Center also noticed a change in the tactics used by racist and violent groups on the Internet. Rather than attempting to recruit directly via the Net, such groups are now focusing on spreading their messages with games and music. Researchers also found that the Internet is being used to create alliances between different groups who have a common enemy. In particular, there was evidence that white supremacists and Islamic extremists were linking up against a perceived common Jewish enemy.
