background: Unity Registry, a new joint venture between UK-based Poptel, registry operator for the .coop global Top Level Domain (gTLD), and AusRegistry, operator of the .au country code domains (ccTLD), was launched on Monday 10th June 2002. The global partnership to create Unity Registry has been formed to bid for the .org Top Level Internet domain. The launch announcement will be made at a meeting in Geneva of major intergovernmental and non-governmental agencies in the .org namespace. This is one of a series of consultation meetings conducted by Poptel on the .org divestiture issue. Poptel has a long history of working with not for profit organisations and has received strong support for its proposals from the .org community. from "Malcolm Corbett" <malcolm.corbett@poptel.coop> Dear friends, Thank you to all of you who have sent messages of support for the Unity Registry proposal for .org. All messages of support have been listed both in our proposal and on the ICANN public comment forum at http://forum.icann.org/org. Currently our proposal has far more supporting statements than any other. There are eleven proposals, ours is a very strong candidate. If you have the opportunity, please ask your own network to send in more supporting statements. A summary of our proposal (currently in English only I am sorry to say) appears at www.unityregistry.org, along with the full proposal. All proposals can be found at www.icann.org. Supporting statements should be addressed to the ICANN Board, and either sent to me, malcolm.corbett@poptel.coop, or posted directly on the ICANN public comment site at http:forum.icann.org/org - but this requires users to register and log in. These are some key points for messages of support. 1) Please address your message 'To the ICANN board' and include your name, position, organisation, and whether you are writing in a personal or organisational capacity. 2) That you support the Unity Registry approach to the .org divestiture for some of the following reasons 3) The partners in Unity Registry have demonstrable technical capabilities - they run both a new gTLD, .coop, and have recently transitioned a large ccTLD, .au, to a new operator. 4) Poptel has a longstanding involvement with the not for profit sectors and is highly regarded. Unity Registry's plans to develop a .org directory thus enabling the creation of beneficial new services is very attractive. 5) Unity has a strong marketing message for .org - that it should become the new 'Digital Commons' and that whereas .com = 'commercial gain', the new .org = 'social gain'. 6) Unity Registry has plans to involve .org users in policy formulation and the future direction of the namespace through the creation of a new .org user cooperative. A minimum of 10% of net profits will be available for new innovations and developments directed by the cooperative. Thank you for your help.
