Media Grants for Programming, Internews Uzbekistan

REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS:

Internews Network in Uzbekistan is administering a fund for the production
of public interest programming, and is accepting applications from
interested parties to receive funds and equipment grants.

On a competitive basis, Internews Network in Central Asia will provide
grants of equipment and will consider supporting operating costs to media
outlets for production of programs on social issues. Grant competitions will
be held periodically. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of
creativity, appropriateness of subject matter, and demonstrated production
ability.

Program Objectives

Internews Network has created a production fund to stimulate production of
information and public interest programming in areas of social importance in
Central Asia, particularly for issues relating to civil society, economic
reform, environment, health, and gender. The purpose of the fund is to
increase the quantity and quality of local television and radio production
and in-depth print journalism, on subjects of vital public interest.

Technical Grants

On a competitive basis, Internews will provide grants of equipment and will
consider supporting operating costs to media outlets for production of
programs on social issues. Grant competitions will be held periodically and
an impartial jury of local and international media and qualified experts
will judge submissions.

Interested parties should present an application including past work, work
plan, budget, and collaborative links with potential partners. Samples of
past work are strongly recommended. All applications must have a guaranteed
distribution mechanism.

Winning media outlets will receive a package of equipment necessary to
produce high quality public interest programming, including video editing
suites, cameras, lights, sound, radio production equipment, and computers.

Ownership of equipment will rest with Internews through the stated duration
of the project, at which point, ownership will be transferred to the
winning party. This relationship will be governed by a contract. Projects
may be local, national, or regional in scope. Preference will be given to
productions that can be distributed nationally or regionally, thus reaching
a greater audience. Actual size of grants will be designed around the needs
of each project, but average grants will be around $10,000, and in no case
will be more than $20,000. As necessary, Internews may use its existing
program distribution paths with partner media outlets to ensure airtime or
print space.

Who May Apply

Television and radio stations, newspapers, magazines and journals in
Uzbekistan are eligible to apply.

Production Grants

Internews will hold a series of competitions to award small grants to media
outlets to produce public service announcements (PSA), short informational
or documentary films, and to support investigative journalism. Grants will
be up to $5000. Grants will be primarily for production costs rather than
equipment purchase. Internews will look favorably, but not exclusively, on
proposals that include collaboration between media outlets and NGOs working
on public information campaigns and community outreach. Projects may address
either a local or national issue, and may be part of a larger advocacy
campaign. Funding may be used for television and radio production or print.
Internews production facilities and technical staff will be available to
grant recipients to help guarantee the quality of final products.

Grant competitions will be held periodically and an impartial jury of local
and international media and qualified experts will judge submissions.

Interested parties should present an application including past work, work
plan, budget, and collaborative links with specialist organizations.

Samples of past work are strongly recommended. All applications must have a
guaranteed distribution mechanism.

Who May Apply

Television and radio stations, newspapers, magazines and journals in
Uzbekistan are eligible to apply. Independent production houses, freelance
producers and writers may also apply, but must include a plan for
distribution in the application.
