DFN HOSTS ONLINE MEETING WITH ALEJANDRA MATUS
Author of "Black Book of Chilean Justice" to discuss her case and current
events

NEWARK, N.J., October 29, 2001 - The Digital Freedom Network (DFN) will
host an online meeting with Chilean journalist and dissident Alejandra
Matus on Thursday, November 1 from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM New York time
(1730-1830 GMT).

The online meeting, which is free and open to the public, will take place
on DFN's Web site at <http://dfn.org/meet>. No registration is required.
Anyone may attend the meeting and post questions to Ms. Matus in the
moderated forum. The meeting will be conducted in English.

Ms. Matus's book, "El libro negro de la justicia chilena," or "The Black
Book of Chilean Justice," exposes the corruption, nepotism, and abuse of
power of the judiciary in Chile. In 1999, Judge Servando Jordan instigated
a criminal action against Ms. Matus for her accusation. Copies of her book
were seized and she was threatened with imprisonment. On the counsel of her
lawyer-brother, Matus fled Chile first to Argentina and then to Miami,
Florida, from where she has waged a fight against the charges against her
and her book. Recently, the judge presiding over the case lifted the ban,
allowing the book to be disseminated in Chile.

The courage of those who devote their lives to fighting for human rights
has recently been brought to light with the murder of lawyer Digna Ochoa in
Mexico. Matus will answer questions about her experiences and her feelings
on returning to her native Chile.

The online meeting will be accessible to anyone running a Java-enabled Web
browser or an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) client application.

The Digital Freedom Network (DFN) is an international organization that
develops and promotes the use of Internet technology for human rights
activism. DFN designs online campaigns, makes technical information more
readily available to activists, and provides an online voice to those
attacked for expressing themselves. DFN's Web site is http://dfn.org.
