(October 16) The Ogiek Welfare Council, fighting to protect a Kenyan
indigenous group's forest homeland, expressed fear that their lives are in
danger after they refused to withdraw their pending cases.
The state-run Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) radio has been
running calls by Nakuru County Council chairman, Councillor Charles Rono,
urging the government to close down OWC offices and describing them as
"stumbling block" to the removal of Ogiek land from environmental protection.

(October 15) A new film claims Mongolian tabloids are frightened to

4. COURT TO EXAMINE OGIEK PETITION ON NOVEMBER 21 (KENYA)

5. ACTIVIST'S WORKSHOP: USING SEARCH ENGINES
Essential to human rights research - in fact, any research - is the ability
to find accurate information. Assuming that one can get Internet access,
the only obstacle lies in the ability of the user to successfully navigate
through the Web in order to find the desired information. DFN's latest
Activist's Workshop article gives a brief tutorial on using Web sites to
search for information online.

6. MEET THE ACTIVISTS: DFN CHAT WITH GAO ZHAN (CHINA)
DFN will host an online meeting with Chinese scholar and former political
prisoner Gao Zhan on Thursday, October 18 from 8:00 to 9:00 PM New York
time (Friday 12:00 AM to 1:00 AM GMT). Gao, a Chinese-born sociologist
living in the United States, spent five months in a Chinese prison on false
charges of espionage before being released in July.
The online meeting, which is free and open to the public, will take
place on DFN's Web site at <http://dfn.org/meet>. No registration is
required. Anyone may attend the meeting and post questions to Ms. Gao in
the moderated forum. The meeting will be conducted in English.
