Low-cost e-mail solution for rural India

A small Indian company has launched a device, patented in India, that can be
used to send and receive local language e-mail over a telephone line for
very much less than the cost of a personal computer. Called an "iStation",
the device looks like a laptop, has an embedded modem and a backup battery.
An e-mail service in southern India is being offered to iStation users for
100 rupees (US$2.20) a month, and is aimed at the country's huge rural
population.
