1. "INSANE" CHINESE LABOR ACTIVIST RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL
(July 18) Cao Maobing was jailed after talking to foreign reporters about
an independent union campaign at the Funing Silk Factory. In December, Cao
was committed to Yancheng No. 4 Psychiatric Hospital immediately after he
talked to foreign reporters about the independent union campaign by 300
workers at the state-owned Funing Silk Factory.

2. TALIBAN BAN INTERNET IN AFGHANISTAN
(July 16) The fundamentalist Muslim group that controls 90 percent of
Afghanistan have focused their censors on yet another media source.
The group that controls most of Afghanistan has banned the use of the
Internet in order to "control all those things that are wrong, obscene,
immoral and against Islam," according to Taliban Foreign Minister Maulvi
Wakil Ahmad Muttawakil in a statement noted by the Pakistan-based Afghan
Islamic Media on July 13.

3. LETTER OF GRATITUDE AND CONCERN (CHINA)
(July 12) "With my present income, it is already impossible to support our
son to finish his schooling. Additionally, a government official once told
me: 'After your husband is sentenced, don't expect your son to go to school
or to have any future.'"
The wife of jailed Chinese Internet entrepreneur Huang Qi thanks her
husband's supporters but expresses concern that she can no longer support
her son.

4. MEDIA SITUATION DETERIORATES IN ANGOLA
(July 11) The suspension of the independent Radio Ecclesia on July 9 and
the arrest of reporter Gilberto Neto is one of several recent attacks on
Angolan journalists. Freelance journalist Rafael Marques reports from Angola.

5. SOUTH KOREA MOVES TO CENSOR INTERNET
(July 10) South Korea has become the latest country to censor its Internet
content. In legislating an act similar to the 1996 United States
Communications Decency Act, the South Korean Ministry of Information and
Communication (MIC) implemented Internet Content Control software on
computers at all public PC centers, schools, and public libraries on July 1.
