International Anti-Racism Broadcast in March 2001
__________________________________________

The World Association of Community Broadcasters or AMARC is co-producing
Radio Voices Without Frontiers, a global broadcast to mark 21 March as the
International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The date 21 March marks the anniversary of the racially motivated massacre
of peaceful demonstrators against apartheid in Sharpeville, South Africa in
1960.

The campaign is a collaboration of community radio stations from all over
the world. The 24-hour multilingual broadcast will be transmitted via
Internet and satellite for re-distribution by radio stations in five
continents. The idea behind the broadcast is to reinforce the anti-racist
and socially inclusive ethos of the community radio sector, and to promote
access to the media by minority and disadvantaged groups.

As AMARC has considerably grown over the years, it is committed to making
the 2001 campaign truly global, programming in English, French and Spanish.
Material in other languages will also be accepted. In addition, the network
has co-ordination centres in four continents, and an international
broadcast hub in South Africa.

Media and related organisations are encouraged to participate by doing any
of the following:
* Host the broadcast as a HUB STATION in Asia and act as the technical
co-ordination centre;
* Be one of the LOCAL CO-ORDINATORS, the backbone of the mobilisation and
publicity work for the broadcast. Local co-ordinators that will contact the
radio stations in their respective areas will be identified from different
regions in the world--they will send out press releases, motivate
broadcasters to contribute programmes and help in planning the programme
elements and themes;
* Be part of the NEWS TEAM and help research news stories for the migration
and discrimination segments of the broadcast;
* Be a PARTICIPATING RADIO STATION and dedicate 21 March as Focus Day to
commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination;

* Be a CONTRIBUTOR to the campaign, and promote 21 March as the
International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, produce a
public service announcement promoting the international broadcast, send
anti-racism resource material for the Voices Without Frontiers Website.
