From: Ericson Monika <m.ericson@idea.int> International IDEA Launches Democracy Forum 2001 Website What are the implications of the IT revolution for democracy? This is one of the headline issues up for discussion at the International IDEA Democracy Forum 2001 - Democracy and the Information Revolution: Values, Opportunities and Threats - a three-day event (27-29 June 2001, Stockholm) including opening plenary sessions, issue-related workshops, and the presentation of a range of policy proposals and recommendations. Digital divide, digital dividend and information communication technology (ICT) have leapt into our lexicons in recent years. But beyond being trendy jargon, these terms now belong to the 21st Century. They are part of the information revolution that is both welcomed and feared by those involved in global politics, and will be thoroughly discussed at the Democracy Forum. In advance of the Democracy Forum 2001, International IDEA has launched a special Democracy Forum website, located at www.idea.int. The website functions as a 'cyberplace' where interested parties can experience some of the issues to be discussed at the Democracy Forum. This could be by participating in the discussion forums, contributing with ideas and comments about the issues, registering online to receive updates on the site etc. The Democracy Forum 2001 website will be continuously developed and expanded in the run up to the June Democracy Forum. "The Democracy Forum 2001 will provide a unique opportunity for all concerned with the societal implications of the IT revolution - from academics, ICT specialists, and business leaders to election managers, development experts and politicians - to come together to debate, reflect and develop creative policy options for the future", says International IDEA Secretary-General Bengt Säve-Söderbergh.
