Newsbytes: Global First as Spammers are Brought to Trial

Two Australian men have been charged with illegally spamming millions
of Internet users, in one of the first criminal prosecutions of its
kind in the world.

According to a Newsbytes report, the men were charged in Australia and
the US for spamming Internet users with misleading investment
information.

The men sent more than 4 million emails and posted messages on Yahoo!
bulletin boards encouraging investors to buy shares in Rentech, a
company which developed processes for manufacturing liquid hydrocarbon.
According to the Australian Securities and Investment Commission,
Rentech's share price doubled on the day after the spamming and the
volume of Rentech stock trading was "more than 10 times the previous
month's average trading volume".

Nineteen charges have been made against the men in Australia, including
dissemination of false or misleading information, operation of a
securities business without a licence and conspiracy to commit an
offence against a law of a foreign jurisdicition, in this case the
United States.

The Securities and Exchange Commission in the US issued civil
proceedings against the men this week.
