FBI LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION OF ANI'S WEB SITE HACKING
- ANI Attack Part of Larger Anti-Armenian Campaign -

WASHINGTON, DC--Armenian National Institute (ANI) representatives
recently met with FBI officials from the National Computer Crime Squad
following a mid-January attack on the Institute's web site that took the
site off line for nearly a week and redirected visitors to an Azeri
propaganda site. The computer hackers called themselves the "Green
Revenge Group" or "HiJak TeaM 187."

Growing evidence indicates that the same group of hackers is pursuing a
campaign to disrupt the free flow of information to and from web sites
on Armenian issues in the United States. An Azeri newspaper, Zerkalo, in
an article dated January 25, stated that the same group of hackers has
"declared war" on a large number of Armenian-related web sites.

The "Green Revenge Group" openly advertises its hijacking and
cyber-terrorism operations on its web site, stating that it will be
"working very hard to increase the list of [Armenian] sites" it plans to
attack in the future.

"We provided the FBI officials with the trail of evidence that the
hackers left behind," said ANI Legal Affairs Director Jacob Toumayan.
"The evidence that we have to date indicates that the attack was
initiated from within Azerbaijan."

What concerns the FBI is the possibility that the hackers are associated
with the Azeri government in some way, which has tight control over the
Internet services in Azerbaijan, thus raising the stakes much higher.

The ANI web site holds extensive information on the Armenian Genocide,
including historic documents, records of international affirmation,
bibliographies, and a unique collection of documentary photographs. The
site has been utilized by tens of thousands worldwide to view
documentation of the crimes committed against humanity during World War
I.

The Armenian National Institute is dedicated to the study, research, and
affirmation of the Armenian Genocide.
