The Digital Freedom Network (DFN), an international human rights Web site, has several volunteer opportunities. The current positions available are: 1. Editor 2. Database designer/computer programmer 3. Foreign language reader 4. Foreign language translator Descriptions of these positions appear below. Editor --------- RESPONSIBILITIES: Help choose cases to be featured for DFN's Web site. Research articles for DFN's Web site: includes contacting free speech and human rights organizations, editing documents, writing brief introduction for site material. SKILLS: Research (especially research using the Internet) experience, writing experience, familiarity with international affairs, and strong commitment to human rights required. HTML and Dreamweaver experience recommended. Ability to read and speak Spanish, French, or Chinese helpful. 2. Database designer/computer programmer ---------------------------------------- RESPONSIBILITIES: Design database to maintain articles and automatically generate pages on DFN's Web site. Add interactive features to DFN's site through scripting. SKILLS: Programming, CGI, HTML, and database experience required. Commitment to human rights strongly recommended. 3. Foreign language reader -------------------------- RESPONSIBILITIES: Help DFN locate and edit material written in foreign languages. Provide basic understanding of material in another language. (NOTE: Foreign language readers do not have to provide an exact translation of the material.) SKILLS: Familiarity with international affairs, good working knowledge of English and another language and strong commitment to human rights required. Good working knowledge of Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, Farsi, or Russian particularly helpful. 4. Foreign language translator ------------------------------ RESPONSIBILITIES: Translate material for DFN's site. SKILLS: Familiarity with international affairs and the Internet good writing skills. Fluency in English and another language and strong commitment to human rights required. Fluency in Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, Farsi, or Russian particularly helpful. ABOUT THE DIGITAL FREEDOM NETWORK --------------------------------- DFN supports peaceful advocates of freedom and democracy by publishing their material on the Internet. By publishing activists' material on the Internet, DFN enables dissidents to speak with a powerful voice to an international audience. Based in Hackensack, New Jersey, DFN works with other free speech and human rights organizations to obtain material for its Web site (www.dfn.org). DFN's sources include such organizations as the Committee to Protect Journalists, Index on Censorship, Reporters sans Frontieres, and Human Rights in China. DFN's Web site has a collection of primary documents related to human rights, including poems, letters, cartoons, newspaper articles, and essays.
