Center for Democracy and Technology
Internet Policy Internship
CDT'S Mission:
The Center For Democracy and Technology is a non-profit
public interest organization based in Washington, DC. CDT
works for public policies that advance civil liberties and
democratic values in new computer and communications
technologies. With expertise in law and technology, the CDT
staff develops practical solutions to protect the future of
free expression and privacy on global communications
networks. CDT is dedicated to building broad consensus among
all parties interested in the future of the Internet and
other new communications media.
Job Description:
As staff members at CDT, interns have the opportunity to
join the front lines of the battle for democracy in a
digital age. Interns contribute to substantive research on
current areas of the Internet policy debate, including free
expression, privacy, electronic surveillance and
cryptography. They attend Congressional hearings and witness
the testimony of CDT staff attorneys, learning by
participation about the policy-making process. Interns are
also encouraged to conduct independent projects on a topic
of their own choosing and to present the results of their
research, as well as to provide policy recommendations.
Because CDT is a public interest organization, the
internship is unpaid. However, internship perks include
brown bag lunches with Internet policy experts and
technology reporters, excellent opportunities for mentoring
and the potential for on-going relationships with the CDT
staff.
To maximize the learning potential of the internship, CDT
would prefer a commitment of approximately 20-15 hours per
week during the academic year. However, this time commitment
is negotiable, since we are more interested in quality than
quantity of working hours. In addition, CDT will gladly
accommodate class schedules and other academic commitments.
During the summer, CDT asks for a full-time commitment of
approximately 40 hours per week.
Relevant Skills & Experiences:
à Basic knowledge of the Internet
à Solid writing and research skills
à Ability to take initiative and prioritize responsibilities in a
fast-paced office environment
à Strong interest in Internet law & policy
How to Apply:
Please send a resume and brief note explaining your interest in CDT.
