 65th IFLA Council and General Conference Bangkok, Thailand,
 August 20 - August 28, 1999

 FAIFE in Bangkok

 FAIFE - Free Access to Information and Freedom of
 Expression - is an initiative within IFLA to defend and
 promote the basic human rights defined in Article 19 of the
 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

 The FAIFE Committee and Office furthers free access to
 information and freedom of expression in all aspects,
 directly or indirectly, related to libraries and
 librarianship. FAIFE monitors the state of intellectual
 freedom within the library community worldwide, supports
 IFLA policy development and cooperation with other
 international human rights organisations, and responds to
 violations of free access to information and freedom of
 expression.

 At the Conference FAIFE will have its regular committee
 business meetings, but also invites you to attend a special
 guest lecture on intellectual freedom, an open session and
 a workshop:

           "The Right to Life - Intellectual Freedoms: The Need for a Deep
           Dialogue between East and West"
           By Basil Fernando, Hong Kong, Executive Director of the Asian Human
           Rights Commission.

 Wednesday, 25 August

           134. FAIFE Open Session
           Including the paper: "Internet Filters: Library
           Access Issues in a Cyberspace World" by Alvin
           Schrader, Director at the University of Alberta
           School of Library and Information Studies,
           Edmonton, Canada.

 Thursday, 26 August
 09.00-13.00
           152. FAIFE / RTMLA Workshop
           Joint programme with the IFLA Round Table on
           Management of Library Associations. Theme:
           Library Associations and Intellectual Freedom
           Contributions by members of the FAIFE committee
           and others: Alex Byrne, Pro Vice-chancellor at
           Northern Territory University, Australia, and
           chair of the FAIFE Committee Russell Bowden,
           Honorary Professor and Consultant, Sri Lanka
           Alexandra Horvat, Associate Professor at the
           Department of Information Sciences, Faculty of
           Philosophy, University of Zagreb, Croatia Yasuyo
           Inouye, Associate Professor at Kyoto University
           of Foreign Studies, Japan Driden Kunaka, National
           Chairman of Zimbabwe Library Association
           Marie-Martine Tomitch of the French library ass.
