Aimed at intermediate level English speakers, the 8 part series looks at how different communities are using the internet. It features a range of examples such as organisations in remote areas (like RAWA in Pakistan) which are publicising their cause through the net and the telecabins in Peru where people are able to use the internet to search for jobs and keep in touch with their families. Other stories featured include a Ugandan woman entrepreneur who sells baskets through a website; Cyberstreet in Islington, London; a new telecentre in Africa where farmers and non-literate people are taught to use the net; residents in a retirement village learning to use the web at age of 75 or over and how Kosovan refugees are being reunited with their families through a website... The series is currently on air and broadcast weekly on the BBC World Service in The Learning Zone on Thursdays at 0905 GMT to Africa, Asia and Europe. First transmission: Thursday 1st July 1999 Website address: www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/netresult Thanks to everyone who helped with contacts in the early stages!
