The Pan African Human Rights Assembly

In 1994 a study was undertaken to review the status of human rights
NGOs in Africa which was achieved by the participation of many human
rights NGOs and activists in Africa. The report identified a lack of
regional co-ordination among human rights groups on the continent.

As a result of this research, The Inter-African network for Human
rights and development (AFRONET), the Human Rights Institute of South
Africa (HURISA) and the British Council proposed to hold a Pan African
Human Rights Consultative Forum whose main objective was to consider
appropriate strategies in developing and strengthening the links and
networking potentials between human rights organisations in Africa.
The principal aim was to work towards a standing forum of human rights
groups that would promote dialogue, the sharing of experiences and
actions on human rights issues in Africa through the establishment of
a framework for meaningful and constructive co-operation between NGOs.

One of the main outcomes of the forum was a Plan of Action, which
among other things considered the establishment of an Assembly of
African Human Rights Organisations.

In 1998, A facilitation group meeting was held from 18th - 19th July
in South Africa to discuss among other things, the modalities for the
launch of the Pan African Assembly. The meeting recognised the need
for allowing debate on the formation and launch of the Pan African
Assembly by inviting all Human Rights NGOs in Africa to give their
views on the importance of the same. The facilitation group agreed on
the creation of a discussion list, which would serve as a forum for
stimulating such debates and discussions concerning the need for a Pan
African Human Rights Assembly and the launch thereof.

Afronet is therefore inviting human rights NGOs to subscribe.
