Re: Pedagogy/methodology of HRE

Dear All,

I am Lindley Couronne a firm and passionate advocate of human rights
education in Mauritius. I was one of the conceptors of the curriculum for
human rights education when it was introduced at primary level in my
country in 2003. To me it seems evident that its pedagogy can only be
participatory, you can't teach human rights in a way that goes against
human rights. HRE experience failed in Mauritius basically because
teachers in our schools were not at all convinced of its pertinence and
also realized that they would have to change radically their mindset and
they were not enthusiastic, to say the least, to effect this paradigm
shift... That's why I believe that considerable preparatory work needs to
be effected before even considering introducing such a "subversive"
subject. There must be a strong political will and one should not
underestimate the resistance factor in teacher unions. Hope that this
modest experience of mine, which has not deterred me from continuing my
work as human rights educationist (am now active with Amnesty
International).

Regards to all, Lindley
