HURIGHTS OSAKA Award 2005 for International Human Rights Education Materials Call for Entries Last year, the Asia-Pacific Human Rights Information Center (HURIGHTS OSAKA) launched the "HURIGHTS OSAKA Award 2004 for International Human Rights Education Materials" to celebrate its 10th year of establishment. In response to its call for applications, 159 entries were received from 82 individuals and organizations, and out of the wide variety of materials received, 4 were selected and presented with the Award. The Asia-Pacific Human Rights Information Center is now calling for entries for "HURIGHTS OSAKA Award 2005" from Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. We will be looking for creative materials and programs for teaching and learning international human rights. The deadline for submission is August 1, 2005. Three outstanding works will be selected for the Award, which comes with the prize money of 200,000 Japanese Yen. The selection will take place in late September 2005, and the Award will be presented at a ceremony in Japan (Osaka). What sort of materials are we looking for? - Works and topics- _ We are looking for original and creative materials and training programs for teaching and learning international human rights. _ The issues taken up by the participating materials/programs can be on anything involving international human rights: international human rights standards and treaties; rights of children, women, people with disabilities, minorities, etc.; right to development and sustainable development or human security. This list is not exhaustive. _ There are no particular requirements for the forms of materials/programs. Last year, for example, we received materials in a wide variety of formats, including: (1) textbooks and other publications, (2) visual materials, such as videos, VCDs, DVDs, (3) powerpoint programs such as slide shows, (4) websites, (5) training programs and materials such as workshop materials, (6) materials and kits for campaigns, and others. In selecting the awardees for the Award 2004, importance was placed on the level of teaching/learning function of the entries. Activity reports and translation of UN and other documents may be valuable material in themselves, but will have lower priority for the purpose of this Award. The teaching/learning materials can be for school education (primary, secondary or tertiary) as well as for adult, home or community education. Another important factor will be the integration of two aspects; of raising the children's and adults' sensitivity regarding human rights, and of understanding human rights issues in the contemporary world. Who can participate? _ Any individual, group or organization from the Asia-Pacific (including Japan) can participate. The material can also be in any language. (However, for works in languages other than Japanese, please attach a description/commentary in English.) _ We are inviting materials/programs produced since January 2003, regardless of whether they have been already published or marketed. Materials/programs received for the Award 2004 cannot be resubmitted. How do participants enter the contest? _ Please submit your materials/programs with the application form, filling in the following details. 1 Name of material/program 2 Name of entrant (individual, group or organization) 3 Contact address (mailing address, telephone, fax and/or e-mail) 4 Short (approximate 200 words) promotional introduction on the material/ program (Mailing cost should be covered by the entrants.) _ Please note that we will not be returning materials/programs received. _ Deadline for submission is August 1, 2005. _ All participating materials/programs should be sent to: HURIGHTS OSAKA Award 2005 for Human Rights Education Asia-Pacific Human Rights Information Center 1-2-1-1500 Benten, Minato-ku Osaka 552-0007 Japan Selection and Publication of the Award Selection Jury will consist of the following people: Jung Kang-Ja Senior Commissioner, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea Sachio Hata (Chair) Professor, School of Policy, Kwansei Gakuin University General Manager, InterMedium Institute Graduate School Ritsue Hata Editor, Osaka Office, Mainichi Shimbun Khanittha Matsuo Program Staff, FM CO-CO-LO Lecturer, Kyoto Seika University Yolanda Alfaro Tsuda Associate Professor, Department of English, Kobe College Kinhide Mushakoji Chairperson, Asia-Pacific Human Rights Information Center President, International Movement against All Forms of Discrimination and Racism (IMADR) Yoshio Kawashima Director, Asia-Pacific Human Rights Information Center President, Senri Kinran College _ The publication of award recipients is planned for late September 2005.
