Dear All,

Since I join this 'family' of HRE and ipso facto have access to the varied
views and even efforts/suggestions in putting in place human rights
education, I find myself occasionally concluding that many human rights
activists, educators and theoreticians have largely fallen into such
mistake of handling the issue as if such can be isolated from certain
variables and the vagaries of history in relation to the different
countries of the world.

Many contributors to this debate tend to be global in thought pattern and
such in my view largely affect their conceptualisation of the whole
process of human rights education and strategy for possible global
actualization. I am however fascinated by Valerie Miller' contributions in
drawing attention to the need to thoroughly appreciate certain dynamics
whose potency can stall such objective that centers on human right
education.

For example, as a philosopher of human rights (by educational
qualification) and human rights activist here in Nigeria, I can
authoritatively say that human rights ideals if taken holistically appear
esoteric within the Nigerian configuration. The reasons for such are
mortely, which range from traditional inhibitions, poverty,
underdevelopment to the delibrate negative efforts of global institutions
like the world bank, paris club, trans national oil corporations like
Shell, Chevron, Elf, Mobil etc.

It is within the above context, that I think it is imperative for
commentators to acknowlege the structural and developmental inequalities
among nations before proferring suggestions; particularly the African
scenario.
