Asia-Pacific leads other regions in women presidents, premiers

Asia-Pacific has more women presidents and premiers than any region and
there are more women ministers in the world than ever before, but leaders
of the Global Summit of Women 2004 which opened at Lotte Hotel in Seoul in
South Korea demanded a still larger role in politics. Women must secure a
much brisker advancement in the political sector, they told a news
conference which kicked off the 14th women's summit.

The annual forum, dubbed "the Davos for Women" because of its wide-ranging
program and great influence, has its largest ever gathering this year with
800 delegates from 84 countries. She released a comprehensive survey of
the status of executive women showing that women have increased their role
in the political world in the last few years.

Asia-Pacific, with five countries led by women presidents or prime
ministers, was top of the representation list. Middle Eastern countries
were included in the Asia-Pacific list. Europe had the highest percentage
of women ministers, with 18 percent. But Asia-Pacific (6.9 percent)
trailed behind the Americas (14.7) and Africa (10.8). Twelve of the 195
countries mentioned in the report had no women ministers of any rank and
nine of these countries were listed in the Asia-Pacific region - North
Korea, Myanmar, Brunei, Lebanon, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Solomon.

In most cases, women ministers remain concentrated in the social services
such as environment or gender equality compared to economic, executive and
political affairs, the report said. Women ministers now totaled only 1,008
but with proper advancement by 2075 can compete favorably with male
cabinet members, the report showed.
