Hello, colleagues I share the following publications with all of you, hoping that you will examine them in light of their human rights content and share your reactions to them. William R. Fernekes, "Courage and Commitment: Paul Robeson, Peacebuilding and Citizenship Education" Theory and Research in Social Education, Vol. 32, No. 1, Winter 2004, pp. 105-112. This article examines how a suburban high school in New Jersey incorporates study of Paul Robeson's life and work into the social studies curriculum, with emphasis on his defense of human rights and commitment to principles of social justice. William Gaudelli and William R. Fernekes, "Teaching about Global Human Rights for Global Citizenship." The Social Studies, January/February 2004, Vol. 95, No. 1, pp. 16-27. This article presents empirical findings and discussion of an action research study completed in a suburban New Jersey (NJ) high school regarding the study of international human rights within the required world history/cultures course for NJ high school graduation. The authors concluded that students view human rights as an important topic in their study of world history and cultures, that students were inspired to engage in social action within their own communities through the study of human rights topics, and that their understanding about the scope and significance of human rights issues expanded to include not only national but international perspectives. Both studies draw upon work done at my place of employment, Hunterdon Central Regional HS, Flemington New Jersey, USA. Bill Gaudelli, now an assistant professor at the University of Central Florida, was formerly a member of our social studies faculty.
