Conference on International Law and Armed Conflict (Adelaide, 26-29 February 2004)

INTERNATIONAL LAW CONFERENCE
The Challenge of Conflict

Adelaide, South Australia
26-29 February 2004

The conference is designed to bring together academics, judges,
activists and researchers to consider the catastrophic consequences of
deadly armed conflict. In spite of decades of efforts to address the
underlying causes of conflict and to prevent their occurrence, the
impact of conflict can be seen in all regions of the world.

The conference is being hosted jointly by The Flinders University of
South Australia and The University of Adelaide.

Considerable attention has been given to the causes of deadly armed
conflicts and the ways in which they can be prevented. Although it is
widely acknowledged that ethnicity, race, religious intolerance and
economic inequality play a role, other factors such as lack of
resources, political repression and corruption also play a part.

The revitalized United Nations system has responded to this epidemic of
violence by focusing on the need of strategies that promote conflict
resolution and peace building. Recently more attention has been given to
prevention of the reignition of conflict in war-torn States, and the
concomitant need for effective and long-term reconstruction.
