BELGRADE, 27 September 2002 – The OSCE Mission to Yugoslavia is organizing
a conference on the separation of powers and the independence of the
judiciary in Zlatibor on 27 and 28 September.

The goal of the event, which the OSCE will hold together with the Council
of Europe and the Lawyers Committee for Human rights (YUCOM), under the
auspices of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID),
is to discuss changes in legislation in the field of the judiciary in such
a way that the judicial reform process can be moved forward.

These changes should also respect the application of the principle of the
separation of powers and independence of the judiciary. One way of helping
the discussion is by sharing knowledge about the same issue from
neighbouring and other countries.

The conference, which will be open to all media, will take place in Hotel
Cigota in Zlatibor and will begin on 27 September at 9.00.
