29 August 2002 IMMEDIATE The International Commission of Jurists announces the online publication of "Attacks on Justice: A Global Report on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers" between January 2000 and November 2001. This publication highlights one of the most challenging issues confronting the legal community in the promotion and protection of human rights: the independence of judges and lawyers. Attacks on Justice evaluates the state of law and its practice in relation to the independence of judges and lawyers in 47 countries. It catalogues the cases of at least 315 jurists who suffered reprisals for carrying out their professional duties. Of these, 38 were killed, 5 disappeared, 44 were prosecuted, arrested, detained or even tortured, 23 physically attacked, 67 verbally threatened and 109 professionally obstructed and / or sanctioned. Individual country reports from Attacks on Justice are now accessible and downloadable in PDF format through the ICJ¹s user-friendly searchable database from the Documents page of the Legal Resources Section of our website. Hard copies of this final edition of Attack on Justice are also still available for CHF 40 plus postage and handling charges from the ICJ Secretariat. To place an order please contact publications@icj.org . (or send a fax to +41 22 9793801) The ICJ now intends to move much of its previously published work to distribution via the ICJ¹s website: http://www.icj.org. Also available in easy to download PDF format from the Publications page of the Legal Resources Section is the complete version of Attacks on Justice and the ICJ¹s other 2002 publications: Terrorism and Human Rights and the ICJ¹s Trial Obersation Manual The ICJ would like to thank IrelandAid, the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office, and Mr William J.
